This image was realized within the framework of the GOODS program, an extensive program of study of primordial galaxies in a field of the Boreal Constellation of the Great Bear and in a field of the southern hemisphere, in the constellation of the furnace. It is close enough to be resolved into individual stars, though because of its distance (about 1.8 million light years) only the brightest are seen, even with a telescope as powerful as the AAT. The galaxy seems to be without symmetry and is classified as an irregular. At one end of a prominent bar a few clouds of glowing gas can be seen; at the other, bright bluish stars are scattered out into what appears to be the first signs of a straggling spiral arm

Stars, the Sun included, were born within clouds of dusty gas such as the Trifid Nebula. Within it a number of young hot stars have already formed. The hottest cause the gas, mostly hydrogen, to emit its characteristic red light. Around the red emission nebula the gas contains many dust grains which preferentially reflect the blue component of starlight, and to the north (top) of the nebula can be seen a bright star which illuminates part of the dust to create a region of blue reflection. These stars are much warmer than the Sun and can be 30 times more massive. Messier 16 is a cluster of young stars which formed about 2 million years ago from the gas and dust which still surrounds them. Brilliant blue stars of this type are much hotter than the Sun and can be up to thirty times more massive. The dark intrusions visible across the face of the nebula are condensations of dusty material which might one day collapse into yet more stars, should they survive the radiation from the bright stars, which is gradually etching them away. Bright red regions of photo - ionised hydrogen such as M16 are usually found in the spiral arms of galaxies and are often associated recent star formation. Eagle and Fleche Constellations - Aquila and Sagitta constellations - The brightest star of this constellation is Altair. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is the center of an almost perfect alignment of three stars and is located about 16 years - light from the Sun. Above the small constellation of the Fleche. Aquila (the Eagle) well represents a mythological bird that was the companion of Jupiter. It lies in the northern Milky Way and contans rich fields of stars particularly in the western half and into adjoining Scutum. The brightest star in the constellation is Altair (Arabic for flying eagle), which is at one corner of the Summer Triangle (Altair, Deneb and Vega). Sagitta (the Arrow) is the third smallest constellation in the sky, and although it contains no bright stars, was well known to the ancient Greeks.
