A survivor at Nordhausen, 1945. Photograph, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945), 1945. Also known as Dora-Mittelbau and Nordhausen-Dora, Nordhausen was located in the southern part of the Harz mountains. The camp provided slave labour for the German V2 Rocket factory at nearby Kohnstein. It was liberated by the US 104th Infantry Division on 12 April 1945. When the first American soldiers arrived at the camp they found only a handful of survivors amongst thousands of unburied corpses. Of the 60,000 prisoners who passed through the camp, around half died from overwork, starvation, disease and cruelty.
