Image title
Jerome Barzotti and his wife Charlotte watching French troops depart for North Africa, Canebière, Marseille, 15th September 1940 (b/w photo)
Published with erroneous caption: 'A Frenchman weeps as German soldiers march into the French capital, Paris, on June 14, 1940, after the allied armies had been driven back across France,' June 14, 1940
Jerome Barzotti (1890-1976) a cloth merchant from the Rue du Tapis-Vert, and his wife (in hat) September 15, 1940 on the Canebière in Marseille. Mr. Barzotti cries when he sees the flags of the dissolved regiments parade one last time before leaving the metropolis to reach North Africa.
This photo was first published in the American magazine Life in March 1941, before being later reprinted in a Frank Capra film with a false attribution (Paris, June 1940).
