Image description

Traffic lines the entrance ramp for the Lincoln Tunnel into New York City, in Weehawken, New Jersey, September 17, 2001. Massive traffic jams of from one to three hours delayed the commute of New Jersey residents into the city on the first day of "business as usual" after the World Trade Center disaster. With the Holland Tunnel closed indefinitely, the Lincoln Tunnel became the only way into the city for commuters from south and central New Jersey, and the problem was compounded by police searches of trucks entering the tunnel.
