Image description

Parmigianino was one of the most prolific and fluent Italian draughtsmen of the sixteenth century. Unusually versatile, his technique ranged from rapid chalk sketches to highly finished presentation drawings. The subtle shading and elegant features of this finely worked pen and ink profile reveal the influence of Raphael and Correggio. A copy by Lucas Vorsterman in the British Museum indicates that the drawing was once in the collection of the Earl of Arundel; it later belonged to the distinguished French collector, P-J. Mariette (1694-1774).
