America in World War I: The Germans left no beer in their abandoned canteens (b/w photo)
The Germans left no beer in their abandoned canteens. This explanation is due Lieutenant Peacock, one of the officers in the picture, who was a "dry" member of the Georgia senate. But when Marshall, the Signal Corps photographer, insisted upon a drinking scene the Southern prohibitionist helped him by posing with a stein in hand. The picture was made in the Bois de Nonsard, September 14, 1918. Seated left to right: Lieutenant J L Gammell, Intelligence Officer, 3d Artillery Brigade, Captain R L Coe, 76th F A, Lieutenant Archibald G Montgomery, 76th F A, Major Shadworth O Beasley, Regimental Surgeon, 76th F A, Lieutenant D Roscoe Peacock, 76th F A, Major Beasley was killed October 13 near Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. He was awarded the D S C posthumously for extraordinary heroism in searching for wounded under fire. Illustration for US Official Pictures of the World War, showing America's Participation, selected from the official files of the War Department by William E Moore and James C Russell (Pictoria Bureau, 1920). Gravure printed.
