An old woman stares into the distance March 31 in a refugee camp near the town of Pavarando, in Colombia's northwest banana-growing region of Uraba. At least 15,000 refugees were forced to abandon their homes and land just over a year ago after heavy fighting between the army, right-wing paramilitary gangs and leftist guerrillas in this area which covers Choco, Antioquia and Cordoba province. President Samper announced during his visit in Pavarando March 31 that the Goverment had received humanitary aid for the refugees from the Inter American Development Bank. More than one million people have been displaced in the last 10 years as a result of Colombia's long-running civil conflict but have been largely ignored by the national and international community.
