Image description

Newly-developed robot, R100, lights up as it squeals "konnichiwa" (hello), upon recognising NEC Corporation Incubation Center Project Manager Yoshihiro Fujita in Kawasaki, west of Tokyo August 26. NEC said the prototype robot is the first of its kind in the world that can identify objects and faces and offer greetings, speaking some 300 colloquial Japanese phrases. It can also control household electronic equipment via voice command, using its infrared rays and video through its built-in cameras. NEC hopes to market the robot by the year 2001. ES/TAN
