Video description

An edited record of the demarcation of the border between Uganda and Kenya from late 1959 to March 1960. The 6-month safari along the trackless border at the foot of the scarp included camels, donkeys and porters. An administrator from each country (L.E.Whitehouse, DC Turkana for Kenya, and John Cleave from Uganda) organised the logistics and trace cutting, and surveyors from each country did the markers and triangulation. 09.55 to 10.01 - A large group of Africans dance in woodland and exit, following costumed male. 10.04 to 10.45 - John Cleave sits in shade supervising weighing of sacks, and recording measurements. A worker reaches into a sack. 10.46 to 11.37 - The Survey team members are seated in front of a military field and are shown individually, with a caption giving their name and association with Kenyan or Ugandan Government. 11.41 to 13.31 - Setting up the surveying instruments and recording of measurements using theodolite and field tape measure. 13.32 to 14.33 - African work parties clear vegetation at border strip which demarcates the international frontier between Kenya and Uganda. 14.33 to 14.51 - Surveyor takes theodolite reading of adjacent hill, signals to adjoining hill survey team and takes further sightings.
