Image description

Captain Clark Gable, American actor, 1943. Portrait of American actor Clark Gable (1901-1960) shot on Kodachrome professional film transparency by J C A Redhead. Gable flew on combat missions as a gunner during World War II and was based at Polebrook, Northamptonshire. The photograph was taken during a visit to the Kodak factory at Harrow. Gable started his career as an extra in silent films, and became a top Hollywood star, appearing in films such as 'It Happened One Night' (1934) and 'Gone With the Wind' (1939). Kodachrome, regarded as the first 'modern' colour process, was announced by Kodak in 1935. Kodachrome film was imported from the USA and was in very short supply during World War Two. As Head of Kodak Ltd's Photo Finishing Laboratory in Harrow, England, Redhead had access to supplies of this scarce colour film. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
