Alcock and Brown leaving Euston, London, 1919. Sir John Alcock (1892-1919) and Arthur Whitten Brown (1886-1948) made the first non-stop transatlantic flight on 14-15 June 1919, using a Vickers-Vimy biplane. They also carried several items of mail with them and in doing so, effectively transported the first transatlantic airmail to Britain. The two men shared £10,000 prize money awarded by the London Daily Mail, and both received knighthoods. On their return to London, the two men received a hero's welcome and are shown here leaving Euston Station after their historic flight, driving through crowds of wellwishers.
