11 year old Luis Mario Rivas, who lives off picking rubbish at the Nejalpa garbage dump, watches as police and security guards monitor the burial of spoilt foodstuffs which he would otherwise eat March 28. A pilot scheme called "Recycling hope" has been set up by two foreign charities to give 8 of the 1000 children of the dump education and health-care during their working day as their parents cannot afford to go without their contribution to the family. The children work in the morning collecting recyclable material for sale, and in the afternoon receive classes and health-care at the recycling centre and receive the minimum wage of US$150 a month each for taking part in the scheme.
