Oil painting on canvas, Lady Constance Harriet Mahonesa Talbot, Marchioness of Lothian (1836-1901) by Sir John Leslie, 1st Bt (London 1822 – London 1916), 1866. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, seated, turned to her right, glancing over her shoulder ro the left. Wearing a brown dress with dark brown velvet trimming, with narrow black choker, and narrow white valenciennes lace edging at neck. Holding an open book. Giltwood label on frame 'Lady Constance Talbot, VIIIth Marchioness of Lothian, T. Leslie'. Inscribed in orange lower left '594'. The Marchioness created the Parterre and Terrace in the East Garden at Blickling which she seems as if she looking out at. The artist was born in London, but was the second son and virtual heir of Colonel Charles Powell Leslie of Glaslough (also known as Castle Lelsy), Co. Monaghan, a descendant Bishop John Leslie of Clogher. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and a captain in the Life Guards, but became a portrait painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Instiution in 1858 and 1860. Her was created a Baronet in 1876. He lived at Castle Lesley between 1853 and 1867, and was MP for the County of Monaghan. Blickling Hall, Norfolk (Accredited Museum)
