The Infirmary stood on the Forth Banks in the west of Newcastle, near where the Centre for Life now stands. It was designed by Daniel Garrett and built in 1751-52 with donations from wealthy individuals. It was intended to treat poor people who could not pay for a doctor, and originally had 90 beds. Extensions were added in 1801-3 and 1852-3. The Infirmary dealt with the cholera epidemics of 1849 and 1853. During the Great Fire of 1854, the Infirmary received 124 burned patients in 24 hours. The building was demolished in 1954.
