Image description

Scientist Muhsin Oezel of Berlin's Robert Koch Institute looks at an electronmicrograph of scrapie associated fibrils (SAF), which are identical with BSE-fibrils, isolated from scrapie hamster brains January 24. The fibrils are aggregated Anyleid-proteins. An animal at the centre of a German scare over mad cow disease may have been imported from Britain and not born in Germany as was first thought, an Agriculture Ministery spokesman said on Friday. The case had caused alarm in Germany, as it appeared the animal was the first one born in Germany to die of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease.
