Cardinal Wolsey as Chancellor, 1515. Thomas Wolsey, the son of a prosperous butcher of Ipswich, was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. Henry VII appointed him his chaplain and employed him in diplomatic work. Under Henry VIII his growth in royal favour was very rapid, and in 1511 he was made privy councillor. Within a few years Wolsey had become Archbishop of York, Bishop of Tournay and Lincoln, Cardinal and Papal Legate, and Lord Chancellor, and for ten years was the real ruler of England. His administrative genius was colossal, so were his greed and arrogance. He lived in more than royal state, and spent his enormous revenues with princely magnificence. Illustration for one a set of cards on Historical London, issued by Hignett's Cigarettes in 1926.
