the present house was built in 1751 for Sir Richard Sykes and enlarged by Sir Christopher Sykes in late 18th century; he commissioned the celebrated plasterer Joseph Rose to decorate the house; Sledmere was gutted by fire in 1911, but was subsequently restored; it was the first house whose interiors were photographed for Country Life and these proved invaluable for the reconstruction;
