The debate was overshadowed by Labor opposition leader Kim Beazley accusing Prime Minister John Howard of sabotaging next week's referendum on whether Australia should cut ties with Britain to become a republic, saying that Howard had "organised the mode of presentation of this particular proposition, right down to the detail of the question itself, to give it the best possible chance of failure".
