The term "Contemporary Art" applies more broadly to works produced since the advent of modern art, although the boundary between modern art and contemporary art can sometimes become blurred due to the presence of modernist-style works outside the specific period of modern art.

Originally emerging as an artistic movement after World War II, it gained particular prominence in the 1960s and 1970s.
