Pakistan has closed its borders to refugees fleeing relentless U.S. air raids. And that has prompted the frightened and the ill and the injured to resort to subterfuge to gain entry. On Monday, Assadullah, a 16-year-old Afghan ice-cream vendor, told border guards, reporters, doctors and nurses that he had lost a leg in a U.S. strike. Everyone believed him and the border guards let him in. But Assadullah, the stump of one leg wrapped in bloodied bandages, had lied. He was just one of many Afghans who had had the misfortune to step on of the estimated 10 million mines that pepper his rugged, war-ravaged homeland - a legacy of the 10-year Soviet occupation from Christmas Day 1979.
